Katherine Yost Memory
Memory has the potential to become new through image. I am fascinated with how memory, through painting, can become independent from its original source and sometimes demonstrates the potential to more accurately recall. Through intuitive processes of subjective association, emotional gaps are impregnated with personal fiction. My intent is to reconnect with discarded fragments of emotive memory through the use of traditional Romantic, Expressionist and Surrealist concepts and techniques.
Recollection is half consciously conjured and half a result of process. Through process, it is allowed to shatter, mutilate, become dismantled, and often remains inconsistent. The specificity of a determined narrative is only used as a catalyst to access the anatomy of the act of recalling, which is temperamental, fluctuating, and ambiguous. Parts stand broken and unresolved, as I choose to provide representations of being that are fugitive and transitory.
