A work of art in the form of a conversation

What lives between the words in a conversation? While gesture, a knowing look, or even laughter might cohabitate with the spoken word, might there be something that exists apart from the words? These are questions to be explored within dia L O G ue, a unique site-specific, time-based installation to be created by JE Baker and Barbara Wakefield. The piece aims to address the often unspoken exchanges that occur within a relationship, and explore how this type of obscured language is generated, cultivated, and maintained.

The artists have chosen to collaborate on this piece as a growth from their generally self-explorative multi-media work. The artists will engage each other in a "conversation" by agreeing to maintain a wordless relationship for two weeks while simultaneously creating an installation of visual messages that is additive and evolving. The artists will alternate time in the studio/gallery space in order to contribute to the "conversation". Each artist will log their understanding of the other's addition while recording the thoughts and essence of their own contribution to culminate in a final log that documents and details the events in this wordless journey.

It is the artists' hope that by isolating this non-verbal, emotionally based element of their communication, they will gain understanding of its origin and assess its purported usefulness. Ideas regarding gender will be related to the study of this phenomenon, as well as the possibility of its alienating properties to those who wish to participate utilizing more concrete tools such as words.

Spectators may witness the evolution of this piece for the first two weeks of July at Gallery Uno. This unique space offers the viewer an uncensored account of the artists at work creating the installation. A preview reception on Friday July 11th will feature the artists working and a special talk by Dr. Saba Ayman-Nolley, a psychologist and educator whose work explores the use of art as a language. The opening reception on Friday August 8th will feature an artist talk with the written log kept by the artists on view. The entire installation will be displayed until the end of the month. Please come and be a part of this interactive art experience.
