BENEATH THE SURFACE
The 48 Stunden Neukölln 2022 Festival theme: Kafayi yemek is a multifaceted Turkish phrase. It can be defined as questioning the moment along with a strong unexpected reaction to a dramatic event.
The immersive installation, BENEATH THE SURFACE is inspired by overwhelming feelings of isolation due to the global pandemic. The site-specific, fiber installation consists of hand-painted, stretched silk circles that continuously spin while suspended from the ceiling at various heights. The imagery portrays a fictional underwater, botanical nursery. Smooth and spiny succulents are fleshy, engorged and retaining water in various stages of rejuvenation. Amid pandemic nerves, there is comfort in the appreciation of a land of wonder, imagination and the possibility of recovery.
